Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, a "global ally" of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community, was scheduled to receive the Outspoken award in San Francisco morning.
The award by the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission recognised that Tutu's "leadership (and) outspokenness have contributed substantially to advancing (our) rights", the commission's executive director, Paula Ettelbrick, said.
The Nobel peace laureate was to give a "historic" half-hour address to about 400 commission members at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral about 4am South African time at the annual gala awards ceremony, entitled "A Celebration of Courage".
In November, Tutu sparked heated debate when, interviewed for a BBC radio programme, he said he was made "ashamed" by the Anglican church's "obsession" with homosexuality. "If God, as they say, is homophobic, I wouldn't worship that God," Tutu said in the interview. See Tutu wins global award Independent Online
